Question:

A sweet company buys a machine that wraps sweets at a rate of 1 sweet per second.
They start using the machine on a Monday. If the machine runs for 10 hours each day, then on which day will the machine wrap the 100,000th sweet?

Answer and Solution:
The correct answer is Wednesday!

We are given the following key pieces of information, sweets are wrapped at a rate of 1 sweet per second, they start on Monday and that the machine is on for 10 hours a day. The best place to start is by finding out how many sweets are wrapped in an hour.
The machine wraps 60 candies per minute (there are 60 seconds in a minute). As there are 60 minutes in an hour, calculating 60 × 60 will give us a rate of 3,600 sweets per hour. Our next step is to work out how many sweets are produced per day. By completing the calculation 3,600 × 10 we can work out 36,000 sweets are made in 10 hours and therefore by the end of Monday,
We can find out that by the end of Tuesday, it wraps a total of 72,000 sweets. Finally adding the same amount representing Wednesday amount leaves us with the grand total of 108,000 sweets. Our answer is Wednesday because we can see the 100,000 is between our amount for the end of Tuesday and the end of Wednesday.
