Word Problem Wednesday: A Back-to-School Calculator Bargain!

Aug 31, 2016

Greetings, problem solvers! It's another Word Problem Wednesday, and this one is for all of you who love a back-to-school bargain. Give our word problem a shot and check back tomorrow for the answer!

The sticker price of a calculator is $16.00. If you have a 15% off coupon and pay 10% sales tax, how much will the calculator cost you?

Update: Here's the solution!

After the coupon is applied to the price of the calculator, it costs $16.00 × 0.85 = $13.60. Next, we add the sales tax; 10% of $13.60 is $1.36, and $13.60 + $1.36 = $14.96.
