Create a Vision Board and Get Your 2016 Goals on Paper!

Dec 29, 2015

As the holiday season winds down and we prepare to greet 2016 with energetic enthusiasm, it's the perfect time to start thinking about all the wonderful things you'd like to achieve as the coming year unfolds! Making a vision board with your child (briefly discussed here) is a great way to outline 2016 goals (in math class or otherwise) while encouraging your child to get those creative juices flowing.

You'll need:

  • A workspace with tons of room to create! (Tip: put some newspaper down to keep surfaces clean and glue-free.)
  • Poster board
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A variety of magazines you can cut up—pictures printed out from the Internet work too!
  • Art supplies - markers, crayons, colored pencils, glitter, paint, etc.
  • Goals and dreams!

A vision board is essentially a fun collage composed of images or words that reflect your dreams. Take a minute to sit with your child; together, write out a list of his or her personal goals for 2016 and beyond. From an A+ in math to landing a coveted spot on a school or sports team, the sky's the limit! Tip: Gratitude is an excellent motivator as well—encourage your child to think about things that make him or her smile and add them to the list. Then, take your list and go through the magazines (or search online) for pictures and words that reflect these goals.

Once you have all your pictures and words cut out, it's time to make your collage! Gather your pictures and words and get creative with layout. You can divide your board into segments for different areas of your life or—for the more free-flowing types—arrange cut outs in a way that's most visually pleasing to you. OR, you can take your creativity into the 3D space and make a vision mobile!

When you're done, find a nice frame for your masterpiece—hang it on your child's bedroom wall as a reminder of his or her potential!

By the way, we'll be posting lots of inspirational tidbits throughout January to help you start 2016 off with a bang, so keep watching the Number Sense Blog for more!
